Going the other way? Accra to Takoradi
Driving from Takoradi to Accra
From Takoradi the N1 runs east past the turn-offs for Komenda and Elmina and on to Cape Coast, which is a convenient break roughly two-thirds of the way along.
From Cape Coast the road follows the same route as the Cape Coast–Accra trip: east through Mankessim and the Apam and Winneba junctions to Kasoa, then into Accra.
Kasoa is the main hold-up. Leaving Takoradi early in the day usually puts you there before the afternoon traffic builds.
By bus or trotro
STC and other intercity coaches run from Takoradi to Accra, and minibuses leave from Takoradi's lorry stations when full.
If you are coming from further west — Axim, Beyin or Nzulezo — local transport runs to Takoradi first, and you change there.
New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Accra on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.
Tips for the trip
- Break the trip in Cape Coast or Elmina if you want to see the castles on the way.
- Leave Takoradi early to get through Kasoa before the afternoon rush.
- Fill up in Takoradi or Cape Coast; both have plenty of stations.
