Driving from Accra to Bolgatanga

The first 250 km is the Accra–Kumasi trip on the N6, through Nsawam, Suhum and Nkawkaw to Kumasi. Getting out of Accra and through Kumasi are the slowest parts of the journey.

From Kumasi the N10 runs north through Offinso, Techiman and Kintampo, crosses the Black Volta at Buipe and reaches Tamale, about 620 km from Accra. From Tamale the last 160 km goes north through Savelugu, Nasia and Walewale to Bolgatanga.

Almost no one drives this in one go. Most people break it in Kumasi or Tamale, and the northern half has long gaps between towns, so plan fuel and rest stops before you set off.

By bus or trotro

Overnight coaches run from Accra to Tamale and some continue to Bolgatanga; book ahead, especially before holidays and festivals in the north.

You can also go in legs: a coach to Kumasi, then Kumasi to Tamale, then Tamale to Bolgatanga.

New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Bolgatanga on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.

Tips for the trip

  • Leave Accra before 5 a.m. or take an overnight coach to avoid both the Accra and Kumasi traffic.
  • Fill up in Kumasi, Techiman, Kintampo or Tamale: fuel stations are further apart north of Kintampo.
  • Carry water. It gets very hot in the afternoon on the northern stretch, especially in the dry season.
