Driving from Accra to Ada
The trip starts east out of Accra through Tema and along the coast road past Dawhenya and Prampram, then continues to Sege before the road turns towards Ada.
Ada is where the Volta River reaches the Atlantic. The area around Ada Foah has river and sea beaches, boat trips on the estuary and guesthouses, and is popular for weekends away from Accra.
Traffic around Tema is the main source of delay. Beyond it the road is generally open, though you should expect slow trucks and market-day crowds in the towns.
By bus or trotro
Trotros for Ada leave from Accra's Tema Station area and from Tema; they leave when full, so the wait varies.
On the way back, vehicles to Accra leave from Ada's main station — try not to leave it late on a Sunday evening.
New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Ada on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.
Tips for the trip
- Leave Accra before 7 a.m. at weekends to get ahead of the Tema traffic.
- Ask your guesthouse about boat trips on the Volta estuary rather than booking at the roadside.
- Take cash — card payments are patchy outside the larger hotels.
