Going the other way? Accra to Koforidua
Driving from Koforidua to Accra
The usual route leaves Koforidua west through Nankese to Suhum, where it joins the N6, the same road that runs on to Kumasi. From Suhum you follow the N6 south through Nsawam, Amasaman and Achimota into Accra.
The trip takes much longer in the morning and evening rush. Off-peak it is well under two hours; between Nsawam and Ofankor at peak times it can be much longer.
There is also a slower, more scenic way over the Akuapem hills through Mamfe and Aburi, which avoids the N6 entirely and is cooler and greener.
By bus or trotro
Trotros and minibuses for Accra leave from Koforidua's main stations and go when full. In Accra they usually end at the main lorry stations such as Kwame Nkrumah Circle.
Koforidua is a regional capital, so you can also find transport on to Nkawkaw and other Eastern Region towns from the same stations.
New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Accra on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.
Tips for the trip
- Leave Koforidua before the afternoon so you are past Nsawam before the evening rush into Accra.
- The Aburi road is a nice change on the way back and passes the Aburi Botanical Gardens.
- Koforidua's bead market, held on Thursdays, is one of the best-known in Ghana.
