Driving from Takoradi to Kumasi

From Takoradi you head east on the coastal N1, passing the turn-offs for Komenda and Elmina and going through Cape Coast, then turn north onto the N8 at Yamoransa.

The N8 runs through Assin Fosu and crosses the Pra River at Assin Praso into the Ashanti region, then continues through New Edubiase, Fomena and Bekwai into Kumasi.

There is also an inland way through Tarkwa, Dunkwa-on-Offin and Obuasi. It is no shorter and has more slow stretches, so most drivers heading straight for Kumasi stay on the coast road and the N8.

By bus or trotro

Intercity coaches and minibuses run directly between Takoradi and Kumasi during the day.

You can also travel in two legs, changing at Cape Coast, which is handy if you want to stop at the castles on the way.

New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Kumasi on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.

Tips for the trip

  • Leave Takoradi early; the road out of the city can be slow in the morning.
  • Cape Coast and Elmina are right on the route — a good break near the start of the trip.
  • Assin Fosu is the usual stop for fuel, food and toilets on the N8.
