Driving from Accra to Wa

The first 250 km is the Accra–Kumasi trip on the N6, through Nsawam, Suhum and Nkawkaw. Getting out of Accra and through Kumasi are the slowest parts of the whole journey.

From Kumasi the N10 runs north through Offinso to Techiman, where you turn onto the N12. It crosses the Black Volta around Bamboi, runs through Bole and Tuna, and then enters the Upper West Region for the final stretch into Wa.

Almost no one drives this in one go. Most people break it in Kumasi or Techiman, or take an overnight coach, and the N12 has long gaps between towns, so plan fuel and rest stops before you set off.

By bus or trotro

Coaches run from Accra to Wa, often overnight; book ahead, especially before holidays.

You can also go in legs: a coach to Kumasi, then Kumasi to Wa, which makes it easy to break the trip.

New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Wa on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.

Tips for the trip

  • Leave Accra before 5 a.m. or take an overnight coach to avoid both the Accra and Kumasi traffic.
  • Fill up in Kumasi or Techiman; Bole is the next large town for fuel before Wa.
  • Avoid driving the northern section after dark if you can.
