Driving from Accra to Kasoa
Kasoa is the first big town west of Accra on the N1, the road to Winneba, Cape Coast and Takoradi. The distance is short, but the road through Mallam and Weija is one of the most congested in the country at rush hour.
Traffic builds heavily in the mornings towards Accra and in the evenings back out to Kasoa, so the same drive can take far longer than the distance suggests.
Because every trip west of Accra passes through Kasoa, how you time this stretch decides much of the journey to the Central and Western regions.
By bus or trotro
Trotros and shared taxis run constantly between Accra and Kasoa and leave when full, with the main pick-up points on the western side of the city.
Allow extra time in the evening: queues for vehicles heading out of Accra can be long.
New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Kasoa on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.
Tips for the trip
- Leave before 6 a.m. or after 9 a.m. to miss the worst of the morning traffic.
- If you are driving on to Cape Coast or Takoradi, getting through Kasoa early saves the most time.
- Keep fuel above a quarter tank — you can be stationary for a long time.
