Driving from Accra to Obuasi

Follow the N6 from Accra through Nsawam, Suhum and Nkawkaw, then on through Konongo to Ejisu on the edge of Kumasi.

From the Ejisu area the route turns south to join the N8 and runs through Bekwai to Obuasi, in the Adansi area. You do not need to go into central Kumasi.

The N6 is busy with trucks and has single-lane stretches, so most of the delay is at the ends: leaving Accra past Ofankor and Nsawam, and getting around Kumasi.

By bus or trotro

The simplest way by public transport is in two legs: coaches and trotros run from Accra to Kumasi all day, and from Kumasi there are regular buses and shared vehicles south to Obuasi.

Ask at the lorry stations in central Accra whether a vehicle is going straight through to Obuasi; availability changes.

New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Obuasi on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.

Tips for the trip

  • Leave Accra before 6 a.m. to miss the worst of the Ofankor–Nsawam traffic.
  • Nkawkaw is the usual halfway stop for food, fuel and toilets.
  • If you are going on to Cape Coast, the N8 continues south from Obuasi through Fomena and Assin Fosu.
