Driving from Accra to Akropong
The route is the same as the road to Aburi: north through Madina and Adenta, then climbing into the Akuapem Hills. Akropong is a few kilometres further along the ridge road.
Akropong is the traditional seat of the Okuapemhene and was one of the first places in Ghana where Basel missionaries settled, in the 1830s.
Most of the delay is leaving Accra. Once the road leaves the city and climbs the hills it is cooler and often quieter.
By bus or trotro
Trotros and shared taxis for Aburi and the towns along the ridge leave from stations in northern Accra such as Madina; ask for Akropong and expect them to leave when full.
Many travellers go to Aburi first and take a short shared taxi or trotro on to Akropong.
New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Akropong on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.
Tips for the trip
- Go early on a weekday to miss the traffic out of Accra.
- Combine Akropong with the Aburi botanical gardens on the same trip.
- Bring a light layer — it is cooler on the hills than in Accra.
