Driving from Accra to Aburi
Aburi is a short drive from Accra, but it is a trip of two halves. The first half is city driving north through Madina and Adenta, where traffic is heaviest on weekday mornings and evenings and on Saturday mornings.
Beyond Ayi Mensah the road leaves the city and climbs into the Akuapem Hills, with bends and cooler air as you gain height. Aburi sits on the ridge and is known for its botanical gardens and its roadside woodcarving and craft stalls.
The same road continues over the hills towards Mampong, so Aburi is an easy half-day trip or a stop on the way to the Eastern Region.
By bus or trotro
Trotros and shared taxis for Aburi usually leave from stations in northern Accra such as Madina; ask for Aburi at the station and expect them to leave when full.
Taxis and ride-hailing cars will do the round trip with waiting time if you agree the price first.
New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Aburi on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.
Tips for the trip
- Go early on a weekday: the gardens are quietest and you miss the worst of the Accra traffic.
- Bring a light layer — it is noticeably cooler on the ridge than in Accra.
- Agree prices at the craft stalls before you pick things up.
