Driving from Kintampo to Tamale
From Kintampo the N10 runs north through Buipe on the Volta River, then through the Fufulso Junction area and Yapei before reaching Tamale, the capital of the Northern Region.
The landscape changes from forest-savanna to open savanna as you go north. Distances between towns grow and services are fewer than on the southern half of the N10.
Fufulso Junction is where the road west to Damongo and Mole National Park branches off.
By bus or trotro
Buses coming north from Kumasi and Accra stop at Kintampo and continue to Tamale; you can also pick up a seat at Kintampo's station.
Services run through the day, but fewer vehicles travel in the late afternoon, so aim for the morning.
New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Tamale on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.
Tips for the trip
- Fill the tank in Kintampo or Buipe — stations get sparser as you go north.
- Drive in daylight only; the road has trucks and few lights.
- If you are heading to Mole National Park, turn off at Fufulso Junction.
