Going the other way? Accra to Ho

Driving from Ho to Accra

From Ho the road heads south through the hills and passes Juapong, a textile town, before dropping to the Volta River at Atimpoku.

At Atimpoku you cross the Adomi Bridge, just downstream of the Akosombo Dam, and leave the Volta Region. The road then runs south across the plains of the Shai-Osudoku district towards Tema and the motorway into Accra.

The first part is quiet, with some climbs and bends near Ho. The slowest stretch is the end: getting past Tema and into Accra, especially in the evening.

By bus or trotro

Intercity buses and minibuses leave Ho for Accra throughout the day. Many go to Accra's central lorry stations, and some stop in Tema.

Ho is also the starting point for transport north to Hohoe and the Wli waterfalls, and east towards the Togo border.

New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Accra on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.

Tips for the trip

  • Leave Ho early enough to be past Tema before the evening traffic.
  • Atimpoku is the usual stop for food — the roadside sellers are known for grilled tilapia from the Volta.
  • Akosombo and the dam are a short detour from Atimpoku if you have time.
