Driving from Kumasi to Wa
The first 120 km is the Kumasi–Techiman road: the N10 north through Offinso to Techiman, the big market town in the Bono East Region, where the road to Tamale carries straight on.
At Techiman you turn off onto the N12 and head west and then north. It crosses the Black Volta around Bamboi, where the road enters the Savannah Region, and runs through Bole, the district capital, and Tuna before entering the Upper West Region for the last stretch into Wa.
Towns are far apart on the N12 and traffic is light, so most of the delay is getting out of Kumasi. Carry water and keep the tank topped up, and avoid the long empty stretches after dark.
By bus or trotro
Buses and minibuses run between Kumasi and Wa, and some Accra to Wa coaches also pass through Kumasi. Many leave early in the morning or overnight.
You can also go in two legs, Kumasi to Techiman and then Techiman to Wa, if you want to break the trip.
New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Wa on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.
Tips for the trip
- Fill up in Kumasi or Techiman; Bole is the next large town for fuel and food before Wa.
- Leave in the morning so the whole trip is in daylight.
- Check the live map for the Kumasi end before you set off; most of the lost time is there.
