Driving from Takoradi to Axim

From Takoradi the N1 heads west along the Western Region coast through Agona Nkwanta towards Axim, a small coastal town in the Nzema East area.

Axim is known for Fort St Anthony, a Portuguese fort dating from the early 1500s that is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing of Ghana's forts and castles, and for its beaches.

The road is generally in reasonable condition, but trucks and the busy small towns slow the trip, especially around market days.

By bus or trotro

Trotros and buses to Axim leave from Takoradi's main stations and leave when full.

Services continue further west towards Half Assini and the Ivory Coast border, so vehicles to Axim are easy to find during the day.

New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Axim on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.

Tips for the trip

  • Go in the morning so you have daylight at the fort and beach.
  • Bring cash — card payments are rare in the smaller towns.
  • If you are driving, fill the tank in Takoradi before leaving.
