Driving from Accra to Sogakope
The route follows the N1 east out of Accra through Tema and Dawhenya to Sogakope, a town on the lower Volta where the road crosses the river.
Sogakope is the junction for the Keta road to the south-east and for the onward drive to Akatsi and Aflao on the Togo border, so it is a common stop for food and fuel.
Most of the delay is getting past Tema. Beyond it the road is generally open, with slow trucks and market-day crowds in the towns.
By bus or trotro
Buses and trotros for Sogakope, Keta and Aflao leave from Accra's long-distance stations, and many pass through Sogakope.
Vehicles heading back to Accra leave from Sogakope's main station and tend to be full in the afternoon.
New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Sogakope on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.
Tips for the trip
- Leave Accra before 7 a.m. to get ahead of the Tema traffic.
- Sogakope is the best place on this road to stop for a meal.
- If you are going on to Aflao, allow another hour or more beyond Sogakope.
