Driving from Accra to Kakum National Park

Take the N1 west out of Accra through Kasoa and past the Winneba Junction to Mankessim and Cape Coast, then turn inland on the Kakum road for the last stretch to Abrafo, the park entrance.

Kasoa is the main bottleneck on the whole trip. The final inland stretch from Cape Coast is shorter than it looks on the map but slower than the main highway.

Kakum is best known for its canopy walkway, a series of rope bridges high in the rainforest. Most visitors combine it with Cape Coast and Elmina castles on the same trip.

By bus or trotro

Take a bus or trotro from Accra to Cape Coast first, then a shared taxi or a hired car from Cape Coast to the park gate.

Many tour operators in Accra and Cape Coast run day trips that cover Kakum and the castles together.

New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Kakum National Park on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.

Tips for the trip

  • Go early: the canopy walkway is quieter and the forest is cooler in the morning.
  • Wear closed shoes that grip, and bring water and insect repellent.
  • Allow a full day if you want to see the castles as well; the drive from Accra is long for a short visit.
