Going the other way? Kumasi to Cape Coast
Driving from Cape Coast to Kumasi
From Cape Coast you join the N8 at Yamoransa, a few kilometres out of town, and head north through Assin Fosu, the largest town on the way.
The road crosses the Pra River at Assin Praso into the Ashanti region, passes through the Adansi area at Fomena and Bekwai, and reaches Kumasi from the south.
Most of the road runs through forest and farmland with long single-lane stretches, so expect slow trucks and plan overtaking carefully. Getting into Kumasi is often slow.
By bus or trotro
Intercity coaches and minibuses run from Cape Coast to Kumasi throughout the day.
Coming from Elmina or Takoradi, change at Cape Coast or look for a bus that continues along the coast and then north.
New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Kumasi on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.
Tips for the trip
- Assin Fosu is the usual stop for fuel, food and toilets.
- Visiting Kakum National Park first? It is about 30 km inland from Cape Coast — go in the morning for the canopy walkway, then start the drive.
- Check the live map before Bekwai: the approach into Kumasi is where most time is lost.
