Driving from Kumasi to Cape Coast
The N8 leaves Kumasi southwards past Bekwai and through the Adansi area at Fomena, then crosses the Pra River at Assin Praso into the Central Region.
It continues through Assin Fosu, the largest town on the way, and meets the coastal N1 at Yamoransa, a few kilometres from Cape Coast.
Most of the road runs through forest and farmland with long single-lane stretches, so expect slow trucks and plan overtaking carefully.
By bus or trotro
Intercity coaches and minibuses run between Kumasi and Cape Coast throughout the day.
For Elmina or Takoradi, change at Cape Coast or stay on a bus that continues west along the coast.
New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Cape Coast on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.
Tips for the trip
- Assin Fosu is the usual stop for fuel, food and toilets.
- Kakum National Park is about 30 km inland from Cape Coast — go in the morning for the canopy walkway.
- If you are going on to Elmina, it is only about 15 km west of Cape Coast.
