Driving from Accra to Techiman

The route follows the N6 from Accra to Kumasi, then switches to the N10 north through Offinso to Techiman, a large market town and a crossroads for routes north and west.

Allow time for both city ends: getting through Accra to Nsawam and then through Kumasi can each add an hour at peak times.

North of Kumasi the road is generally open but busy with trucks, so keep a steady speed and overtake only on clear stretches.

By bus or trotro

Direct buses to Techiman leave from Accra's long-distance stations, and many routes to the north pass through Kumasi, where you can also change.

Techiman is a busy transport hub, so onward vehicles to Sunyani, Kintampo and Tamale are easy to find.

New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Techiman on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.

Tips for the trip

  • Techiman's big market day is a good reason to visit, but it makes the town busy — arrive early.
  • Fill up in Kumasi or Techiman; stations are fewer on the open road between them.
  • If you are going on to Tamale, plan to split the trip over two days.
