Driving from Bolgatanga to Paga
The road runs north from Bolgatanga through Navrongo to Paga, the last major town before the Burkina Faso border.
Paga is known for its sacred crocodile ponds, where visitors can see crocodiles that local people consider part of the community.
Navrongo, on the way, has a large mud-brick-style cathedral and is a good place to stop. The road is mostly straightforward and flat.
By bus or trotro
Trotros and shared taxis run between Bolgatanga, Navrongo and Paga during the day and leave when full.
If you are crossing the border, vehicles run from Paga to the border post, but check entry rules before you travel.
New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Paga on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.
Tips for the trip
- Go in the morning — the north is hot by midday.
- A local guide is usual at the crocodile pond; agree the fee before you start.
- Carry your passport if you are going close to the border.
