Driving from Cape Coast to Takoradi
This is one of the easier stretches of Ghana's coast road. From Cape Coast the N1 runs west past the turn for Elmina and Komenda Junction and on to Takoradi, with views of the coast in places.
The road passes through busy small towns, so expect slow stretches with market traffic and shared taxis stopping at the roadside.
Takoradi is the main city of the Western Region and a base for the coast further west, including the Cape Three Points and Axim areas.
By bus or trotro
Buses, minibuses and trotros run frequently between Cape Coast and Takoradi and leave when full from the main stations in each town.
STC and other coach companies also serve the route as part of longer trips between Accra and Takoradi.
New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Takoradi on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.
Tips for the trip
- Elmina Castle is a short detour off the main road and worth a stop on the way.
- Travelling mid-morning avoids most of the commuter traffic in both cities.
- Keep your phone charged and fuel topped up before you leave if you are driving yourself.
