Going the other way? Accra to Kumasi

Driving from Kumasi to Accra

Leave Kumasi eastwards through Ejisu and follow the N6 the whole way. The road runs through Konongo and Juaso, then drops below the Kwahu ridge at Nkawkaw, roughly halfway.

From Nkawkaw it continues through the forest towns of the Eastern Region — Anyinam, Bunso and Suhum — to Nsawam, where the traffic into Accra begins. Parts of the highway are dual carriageway and other stretches are single lane each way, so slow trucks matter on the older sections.

Coming into Accra, Nsawam and Ofankor are where time disappears, especially on weekday afternoons and on Sunday evenings when people are returning to the city.

By bus or trotro

STC, VIP and VVIP coaches run from Kumasi to Accra through the day, and are the most comfortable option without a car. Book ahead for Fridays, Sundays and public holidays.

Minibuses and trotros for Accra leave from Kumasi's main lorry stations and go when full. Coming in, they usually end at Accra's Kaneshie or Circle stations.

New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Accra on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.

Tips for the trip

  • Leave Kumasi early enough to be past Nsawam before the late-afternoon rush into Accra.
  • Nkawkaw is the usual halfway stop for food, fuel and toilets.
  • Check the live map before Suhum: if Nsawam is jammed, you will want to know before you commit to it.
