Going the other way? Accra to Tamale

Driving from Tamale to Accra

From Tamale the N10 runs south across open savanna, crossing the Volta at Yapei and again near Buipe, then reaches Kintampo, where the savanna gives way to forest.

The road continues through Techiman and Offinso into Kumasi. From there it is the N6 south-east through Ejisu, Konongo and Nkawkaw to Suhum and Nsawam, and on into Accra.

It is a long day's drive. Most drivers split it at Techiman or Kumasi, and the northern half has long gaps between towns, so plan fuel and rest stops before you set off. The last hour or two is often lost between Nsawam and the city.

By bus or trotro

Intercity coaches, including STC, VIP and VVIP, run from Tamale to Accra every day, and many travel overnight. Book ahead, especially before holidays and festivals in the north.

You can also go in two legs: a bus or minibus from Tamale to Kumasi, then a coach from Kumasi to Accra.

New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Accra on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.

Tips for the trip

  • Leave Tamale early or take an overnight coach, and time your arrival to avoid the evening rush into Accra.
  • Fill up in Kintampo or Techiman — fuel stations are further apart north of Kintampo.
  • Kintampo and Techiman are the usual places to break the trip.
