Driving from Tamale to Yendi
The road leaves Tamale heading east across open savanna to Yendi, the seat of the Yaa Naa, the overlord of the Dagomba kingdom.
The drive is mostly flat and passes small farming villages. Surface quality varies, so expect slower patches.
Yendi is a good base for visiting the Dagbon traditional area; ask locally about visiting protocols, especially around festivals.
By bus or trotro
Minibuses and shared taxis run between Tamale and Yendi through the day and leave when full from the main stations.
Aim to travel in the morning, as the number of vehicles falls in the afternoon.
New to trotros? Read how to ride a trotro. Fares change often, so check at the station before you travel. For live directions — by car, bus, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Yendi on the Lincoln Navigation map. It shows road hazards other drivers have reported and the weather along the way.
Tips for the trip
- Carry cash and water — there are few services between the two towns.
- Dress modestly and ask before taking photographs around the palace area.
- Check the news before travelling, as local events can affect road access.
