About Wli Waterfalls

Wli is Ghana's highest waterfall, falling from the forested Agumatsa hills near Hohoe, just short of the border with Togo. The falls sit inside the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary, where a colony of thousands of fruit bats roosts in the cliffs around the water. From Wli village, a walk of under an hour through the forest reaches the lower falls; a steeper climb leads on to the upper falls for those who want the full view.

Getting there

The falls are reached from Wli village (Wli-Afegame), about 20 km east of Hohoe in the Volta Region, close to the Togo border. From Accra the usual route is north-east through Ho or via the Akosombo/Adomi Bridge road to Hohoe.

From Hohoe, shared taxis and tro-tros run to Wli village; the walk to the falls starts at the visitor office there.

For live, turn-by-turn directions from wherever you are — by car, trotro, motorbike, bicycle or on foot — open Wli Waterfalls on the Lincoln Navigation map. It also shows the weather there and any road hazards reported along the way.

Before you go

  • Register and pay at the visitor office in Wli village before setting off; guides are available there.
  • The falls are at their most powerful in and just after the rainy season.
  • Wear good shoes — the upper falls trail is steep and can take a few hours there and back.
